1988年5月東京大学大学院在学のまま渡米したため,最初はpostgraduate fellowとして勤務しながら研究を続け,1990年5月に学位取得後はpostdoctoral associateとして研究を継続した.研究テーマは,細菌べん毛特異的輸送系(細菌毒素分泌などに用いられるタイプIII輸送装置と相同なもの)に関係する蛋白質およびその遺伝子の解析であった.

1991年4月に理学部助手として赴任した.1993年7月に研究室の今栄康雄教授が急逝するという不幸に見舞われたが,本間道夫助教授(当時,現教授)と協力して研究を継続し,1997年12月に助教授に昇格した.研究面では,(1)ナトリウム駆動型べん毛モーターのエネルギー変換機構および(2)細菌走化性シグナル伝達機構を大きなテーマとした.(1)については,海洋ビブリオ菌の形質転換系を確立するとともに,ナトリウム駆動型べん毛モーター遺伝子をクローン化し,その後の解析の基礎を作った.今栄教授逝去後は徐々に(2)にテーマをシフトし,とくに受容体の構造-機能相関に関して研究を行った.
法政大学
2007年4月に工学部生命機能学科教授として赴任した.その後,工学部の改組に伴い,生命科学部生命機能学科(生命機能学専修)に異動した.また,赴任直後から大学院も担当している(当初は工学研究科物質化学専攻,2010年度以降は生命機能学専攻).研究面では,大腸菌,コレラ菌,海洋ビブリオ菌を材料として,(1) 細菌走化性シグナル伝達機構,(2)走化性以外の細菌環境応答機構,(3)細菌膜蛋白質局在化機構などをテーマに研究を進めている.最近の成果としては,大腸菌走化性受容体によるアミノ酸識別機構を明らかにしたこと,大腸菌の温度受容に受容体ペリプラズムドメインが不要であることを示したことがあげられる.現在の研究テーマは,コレラ菌のアミノ酸走性受容体の同定と機能解析(病原性との関連が示唆される),コレラ菌走化性関連シグナル伝達系の嫌気条件での特徴的局在の発見と解析(病原性との関連が示唆される),大腸菌忌避応答の分子機構などである.また,走化性以外にも視野を広げ,病原性や薬剤耐性に関する研究も進めている.
